- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student acquires a fundamental
knowledge on the electric and magnetic phenomena. He/she knows how
to use the acquired knowledge to solve simple problems related to
the creation of electric and magnetic fields, to the conduction and
induced currents, to the particle motion in e.m. fields, and to the
propagation of e.m. waves according to geometric and wavelike
optics.
Course contents
- Electrostatic field and its properties. Capacitors, electric current, resistors and simple circuits.
- Magnetostatic field and its properties. Lorentz force.
- Electric and magnetic properties of matter: polarization and magnetization.
- Time-dependent electromagnetic phenomena. Electromotive force, inductors and oscillating circuits.
- Maxwell equations.
- Electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic spectrum. Interference, diffraction, polarization.

Teaching methods
Lectures and exercitations in the lecture-hall
Assessment methods
The final examination is for the evaluation of the student level of
learning of the arguments presented and of the student
understanding of the fundamental principles of electromagnetism
(waves included).
The grades are based on the quality of the answers given to several
questions posed during a written examination
