Academic Year 2012/2013

  • Docente: Diego Savoia
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: CHIM/06
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Diego Savoia (Modulo 1) Claudia Tomasini (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemistry (cod. 8029)

Learning outcomes

After the course the student will be able to choose the proper methodology for the synthesis of target molecules generally through the formation of carbon-carbon bonds exploiting organometallic compounds andp-complexes of transition metals as stoicheiometric reagents, as well as following procedures which involve the formation of radicals or radical cations/anions as intermediates, with control of chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. After the laboratory module, the student will be able to solve the problem of the structural determination of relatively complex organic compounds using modern, non-destructivespectroscopic techniques (IR, NMR, CD) particularly focusing on homo- and heteronuclear bidimensional NMR techniques.

Course contents

nature of the bond, structure, properties, preparation, reactivity and reaction mechanisms of organometallic compounds with covalent carbon-metal bond. P complexes of transition metals: nature of the p bond, preparation, reactivity (nucleophilic/electrophilic complexes), basic reaction mechanisms, applications as stoicheiometric reagents in chemo-, regio- and streoselective organic synthesis. Generation, properties, reactivity of carbon radicals, radical-cations and -anions for applications in organic synthesis; comparison between organometallic and radical-based methodolgies.

In the klaboratory, the students will extract some natural compounds, such as shikimic acid, caffeine, capsaicine, menthol and will determine the structure of these molecules by means of IR and NMR spectroscopy and MS analysis.
