Learning outcomes

Through the study of monuments and texts, students are able to place Greek Tragedies and Comedies within the historical and dramaturgical context and to appreciate their contribution to European Culture to nowadays

Course contents

in order to attain 6 ects, the students have to know: 1) the history of Greek Theatre. 2)Sophocles, the Women of Trachis. 3) Euripides, Alcestis.4) Euripides,Children of Hercules. 5)Aristophanes, Birds.

Teaching methods

Classroom lessons willdeal withthe main features of the ancient drama and its scenic conventions, with examples from the texts in program. Some screenplays will be examined.

Assessment methods

During the oral exam at the end of the course, the students will need to demonstrate the knowledge of the whole handbook at 1) and of the ancients texts (nrr. 2, 3, 4), with introductions and notes, except for the philological and metrical ones.
