Learning outcomes

At the end of the course it is expected that the students will have learned the essentials of the metalanguage and the basic principles of the FG descriptive and analytical model of the English language. In addition they should have a B 1 competence in the language with reference to the paramenters of the Council of Europe.

Course contents

Students who wish to enrol in the Lingua e linguistica inglese 1 corse for e-learners (LEA) are required to enrol in an Internet-based list which will be available on the www.facli.unibo.it website in mid-December 2012

Linguae linguistica inglese 1includes the following parts:

a) English Linguisticsblended e-learning. This is an introduction to the systemic-functional grammar model in the English language, taught by the course professor. There will be 3 lectures in Facoltà (the first is on Feb 20, 2013, in aula G, Vicepresidenza della Scuola di Lingue e Letterature, Traduzione e Interpretazione, via Filippo Re 8): the rest of the course will be taught on-line through a Moodle platform. In order to qualify as e-learners, all participants are required to enrol and to participate actively;

c) Esercitazioni pratichetaught bylettori/collaboratori linguistici. Students should by the end of year have reached the level B2 in all four linguistics abilities: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Readings/Bibliography

The linguistics e-learning component has e-resources such as PDF files, video-lectures and PPT slides. The main reading is M. Freddi (2006) Functional Grammar: An Introduction for the EFL student, Clueb, Bologna. This can be bought from Libreria Feltrinelli International in Via Zamboni, Bologna; it can also be borrowed from the Departmental Library, where it will be found in reserve for students of Lingua e Linguistica inglese 1 - elearning (Dr. Fusari or Prof. Miller).

Readings for the Workshop:

Practice in Functional Grammar. A Workbook for Beginners and Intermediate Students with keys (2006), Clueb, Bologna (also available at Feltrinelli and in the library as above).

Teaching methods

Blended e-learning. This course is on a Moodle platform, and it also includes 3 lectures. The first lecture is on Feb 20, at 12, in aula G, via Filippo Re. Students enrolled in this e-learning course (enrolments will open in mid-December on www.facli.unibo.it ) will need to attend the first lecture to receive instructions on how to participate in the course on Moodle.

Assessment methods

The final exam is the same for all, no distinction is madebetween frequentanti e non frequentanti. The examis made up ofthe following:

1. a written exam focusing on thelinguistics component. This is a multiple choice text with 30 items. A facsimile of this test is available online, http://www.facli.unibo.it/Lingue/Studenti/Programmi+di+studio+specifici/EnglishLanguageStudiesProgram/lezioni_frontali_laurea.htm. Students who have registered for the e-learning course take the same written test. However, those who have participated actively in the forum and have done a percentage of the exercises assigned by the teacher can sit a pre-test. This will take place at the end of the course and before the written test. Should they pass this pre-test, students will be awarded 1 to 5 points which will be added to score of their written test.

Only after passing the two written exams, can students sit the SAT. There are three written exams every academic year, one for each session (May, September and January). Written exams are valid for two years. Exams for those who have English as third language.
