Learning outcomes

Students will learn fundamental topics and methodologies for the study of problems concerning the modelling, the analysis and the design of mechanical transmissions components and hydraulic drives, and the fundamentals of automatic control.

Course contents

1. Drives

Introduction: power, absorption, efficiency, torque-speed characteristics, transients, periodic range, flywheels.

Couplers: classification, solid couplings, Hooke's joint, constant velocity joints, flexible joints, dynamic modelling.

Clutches: classification, disk friction clutches, conical friction clutches, transients, fluid drives.

Brakes: classification, block brakes, transients, brake torque.

Belts: flat belts, V belts, cog belts.

Gear trains: epyciclic trains, differential trains, change gears.

Variable-speed drives: classification, choice of a variable-speed drive.

Cams: trajectory planning, cam-systems.

Hydraulic transmissions: components, pumps, hydraulic motors, hydraulic cilinders, hydraulic circuits.


2. Automatic control

Introduction: historical background, direct and feedback control, block diagrams.

System dynamics: lumped parameter systems, ordinary differential equations, Laplace transforms, tranfer function, examples.

Control systems and Bode analysis: stability, frequency response, Bode plots, phase-gain, phase margin, gain margin.
