Learning outcomes
The student will learn to use internet databases for the solution of pharmaceutical problems and will have communication and interpersonal skills to perform scientific information.
Course contents
Introduction:
The course is a choice for students of pharmacy whereas is compulsory for students of Scienze farmaceutiche applicate (curriculum: Informazione sul farmaco).
This course requires basic knowledge on the use of personal computers and network. It prepares the student to find information about issues of pharmaceutical interest.
The final grade will take into account the class attendance and the active participation in the research that will be proposed. The student who cannot attend the lessons should ask for an appointment with the teacher and discuss other possible learning approaches. This should take place within the first half of the course.

Strategies to search for books but mainly to search for patents and articles published in scientific journals.
The dissemination of scientific culture and the importance of a critical assessment of the information.
Chemical Abstracts: the paper edition, the query via telnet with STN (Scientific and Technical Network) and query via the web (SciFinder).
Beilstein: the paper edition and query via the web.
Medline and Micromedex.
Use of other online databases.
The importance of choosing the right keywords. How to narrow the search. Use of shortcuts and logical operators (AND, OR, NOT). Practical examples of setting the strategy for research; analysis of results and its feedback to optimize the strategy.

Teaching methods
The student will be informed about the most recent mothods for use of the received links. Later he will be asked to report on what he found useful for the purpose of the course.
Assessment methods
The final exam will consist in performing a search, previously agreed with the teacher, during which the student should demonstrate the ability to set a strategy and then be able to move within the database.
