Learning outcomes
Attending this course, students will be able to attain an overview of a variety of topics the psychological investigation on language and communication deals with on interdisciplinary grounds. Selected topics and theories in semantics and in pragmatics will be discussed in order to highlight the role of cognitive processes in discourse comprehension and in verbal interactions.
Acquaintance with these topics can help students attending more advanced study in Philosophy, Linguistics Cognitive Science and other research areas. Besides, the course provides students with a suitable methodology to be applied in different fields, such as cognitive science publishing, journalism and media concerned with scientific and social communication; cultural promotion and organisation; advertising; welfare work and public relations; scientific topics diffusion in educational and socio-cultural promotion settings.
Course contents
The course will start on April 16, 2012 (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. ; Dipartimento di Psicologia, Viale Berti-Pichat 5, Aula 2).
Main topics:
- Discourse comprehension in an interactional perspective;
- Anaphor and deixis;
- Speech Acts, Conversation Theories and Politeness.

Teaching methods
At the beginning of the course lectures are foreseen. The following lessons propose discussions and common work with students.
Assessment methods
Oral examination. Students can ask the teacher for a written examination, which will consist in a short paper to be submitted 10 days before the exam. The topic of this paper, its lenght and language are to be agreed upon with the teacher. At the exam this paper will be discussed and evaluated.
