32093 - Development, Territory and Social Research

Course contents

The course is divided into two thematic modules.

The First Module will describe the theme of development from the viewpoint of a general sociological theory with particular reference to the binomial community/society concentrating on the passage from the social integration to social inclusion/exclusion as a possible key to reading the complex social reality. Secondly, social integration and social inclusion will be ecologically contextualized mainly with reference to the urban/metropolitan dimension. (In this part of the course reference will be made to classic authors like G.Simmel, R.E.Park and L. Wirth, and also to contemporary theories such as N. Luhmann's Systems Theory.

In the Second Module , in the light of the theoretic framework above, various elements of methodology and techniques of social research on the territory will be introduced using as reference classical studies,  mainly from the from the  Chicago Ecological School but also other more recent studies conducted in urban/metropolitan environments that has as a thematic core the theme of social exclusion. Particular attention will be paid to the integration of qualitative and quantitative sources in social research and to the topic of data collection.
