29993 - French Linguistics 1 (LM)

Course contents

1° modulo (Prof.ssa Alida M. Silletti) - 1° semestre

This course aims at presenting the main notions of general linguistics to allow students to recognize them and to work on the language.

The course will be followed by the definition of special languages and their links with sciences of language.

Finally, it will deal with interlinguistic translation of special language, in order to show how translators can face problems concerned with specialized translation.

 

2° modulo (Prof.ssa Valeria Zotti) - 1° semestre

The general aims of this course are :

- to increase students awareness of the linguistic variations of French language from diachronic, diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic and contrastive/comparative perspectives in order to recognize and transcode them according to the most suitable procedure ;

- to learn referring, trusting and mistrusting the main translator's tools: dictionaries, databases , monolingual and bilingual corpus, machine translation;

- to practice translation carefully  with the help of a coherent system of translation techniques, supported by theoretical concepts  of general and applied linguistics and practical works on computer applications.

 

Readings/Bibliography

A detailed bibliography will be presented during the course.

Assessment methods

1° modulo (Silletti)

An oral exam has been scheduled at the end of the course (from 2011 January-February session). Students should also be tested during the course. This evaluation, if positive, will be considered as part of the final exam.  

2° modulo (Zotti)

-          An oral talk on a subject discussed during the lessons;

-          A short essay on translations problems of a text chosen by the candidate according to some required parameters.
