Learning outcomes

Aim of the course is to supply deep knowledge on different topics of the Greek society during the I millennium BC., providing the critical tools for a correct comprehension of the archaeological documentation.

Course contents

I. The Greeks in Italy. From the Myceneans contacts to the historical colonisation. The provenance of colonist from various areas of Greece. The main Greek cities of Sicily and Magna Graecia. The cities and their territories: urban planning and settlement procedures. The agorai. The sanctuaries.Outlines of  the history of art and material culture

II. Annual topic:Gods and craftsmen. Archeologies of the western Greek colonies. Archaeology of religion. Civic cults: legacies of the motherland and ideology of conquest. From Tradition to Innovation. The western Greeks and the Panhellenic sanctuaries. Heroic cults. Offerings and votive gifts. Domestic religiousness. Funerary cults. Archaeology of artistic and craftsmanship production. Outlines of architecture. Painting and pottery decoration. The Tomb of the Diver. Coming to the West of Attic Red-figure Vase-painters. Sculpture in marble and stone.The minor arts: choroplastic, toreutics, jewelry.

The course will begin october 10, 2011. During the first lesson will be given instructions about the course and  the exam.

Students taking the exam for 6 CFU have to attend only part I of the course.

Teaching method consists of head-on lessons

Assessment methods

Final test consists of an oral examination in italian 

Teaching tools

During the lessons visual aids will be widely used, especially projections from computer. All students will have the chance to supplement the lectures of the course with practice in laboratory among the didactic proposals of the Department of Archaeology.
