28824 - Physical Chemistry 2

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Docente: Claudio Degli Esposti
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: CHIM/02
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows how to apply quantum mechanics to describe molecular systems. He knows how the geometry and the electrical and magnetic properties of the molecules depend on the electronic structure of the bonds. He knows how to determine molecular properties using different spectroscopic techniques.

Course contents

Interaction between electromagnetic radiation and molecules: transition moment, selection rules, intensity of transitions.

Main spectral regions : radiofrequency, microwave, infrared, visible-ultraviolet.

Quantum mechanics of model systems :  harmonic oscillator and rigid rotor.

Rotational spectroscopy of linear molecules.

Vibrational and ro-vibrational spectroscopy of diatomic molecules. Vibrational spectroscopy of polyatomic molecules: from normal modes to localized vibrations. Analytical applications of IR spectroscopy.

Absorption electronic spectroscopy. Effects of molecular vibrations : Frank-Condon principle. Main chromophores of organic molecules. Electronic spectra of transition metals ions.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) : chemical shift and fine structure of H-1 NMR signals.
