Learning outcomes

This course is focused on the study of basic and applied aspects of microbiology, in particular, the study of cellular and molecular basis of microbial pathogenesis, host-microbes interactions, microbiological biotechnology and clinical and diagnostic aspects of microbiological and virological analysis.

Course contents

Introduction to Medical Microbiology Basic aspects of infectious diseases. Role of immune system in microbial infection. Serological assays. Vaccine and serum prophylaxis. Bacteria Bacterial structure, metabolism and growth. Spores. Classification of bacteria. Bacteria isolation and identification. Bacterial genetics. Host-bacteria interaction. Mechanisms of bacteria pathogenesis. Antibacterial agents and drug resistance. Diagnosis techniques of bacterial infection and laboratory management. Human bacterial infections: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus cereus, Corynebacteria, Lysteria, Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus cereus, Mycobacteria, Actinomyces, Neisseria, Enterobacteriaceae, Vibrios, Helicobacter, Campylobacter, Yersinia, Francisella tularensis, Brucella, Haemophilus, Bordetella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella, Clostridia, Bartonella, Spirochetes, Rickettsiae, Ehrlichiae, Chlamydiae, Mycoplasmas. Fungi Classification, structure and growth of fungi. Pathogenesis of fungi infections. Diagnosis techniques of fungi infections and laboratory management.Antifungal agents. Human fungi infection: Yeast-like fungi, Filamentous fungi and Dimorphic fungi. Protozoa Classification, structure and growth of protozoa, Pathogenesis of protozoal infections. Diagnosis techniques of protozoal infections and laboratory management. Antiprotozoal agents. Human protozoal infection: Intestinal and uro-genital flagellates. Hemoflagellates. Amoebas. Sporozoa. Ciliates. Helminths Classification and structure of helminths. Human helminthic infection: Cestodes, Nematodes, Trematodes. Viruses Classification, structure and replicative cycle of viruses. Pathogenesis of viral infections. Diagnosis methods of viral infections and laboratory management. Antiviral agents and Interferon. Viruses and oncogenesis. Human viral infection: Poxviridae, Herpesviridae, Adenoviridae, Papovaviridae, Parvoviridae, Hepadnaviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Bunyaviridae, Togaviridae, Coronaviridae, Astroviridae, Reoviridae, Caliciviridae, Picornaviridae e Retroviridae. Teaching methods

Oral lessons are focused on exposition and discussion about medical Microbiology subjects. Particularly, specific microbiological agents with a description of basic characteristics, pathogenesis, related diseases and diagnosis methods will be discussed.

Assessment methods

They will be based on final oral examination where the teachers will analyze the student knowledge about course content.
