Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to give essential information about: 1. penetration, distribution, and clearance of micro-organisms from the human body; 2. the involvement of organs and systems in the principal infectious diseases; 3. the correlation of the various pathological situations and the different aetiological agents; 4. Interpretation of laboratory results and aetiological diagnosis.
Course contents
Respiratory tract infection
The principal pathogens, essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: pharyngitis, laryngitis, acute and chronic pneumonia. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Infections of the gastro-enteric tract
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, diarrhea, disentery, viral hepatitis A, B,C,D,E. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Infections of the genito-urinary tract
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: sexually transmitted diseases, cystitis. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Pyogenic and fungal infections of skin, bone and joint
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: pyoderma, superficial mycoses, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis.
Intravascular infections, heart infections and central nervous system infections
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: sepsis, septic shock, endocarditis, myocarditis, pericarditis, chronic and acute meningitis, brain abscess. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Zoonoses and arthropod-borne infections
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: brucellosis, leptospirosis, psittacosis, rabies, leishmaniasis, malaria, Lyme disease, rickettsiosis, tick-borne encephalitis. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Infections of the Fetus and Newborn. Infections in children
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: STORCH infections, measles, chickenpox, mumps, infectious mononucleosis. Interpretation of laboratory results.
Nosocomial and opportunistic infections
The principal pathogens; essential notions of pathogenesis. Selection of the appropriate tests for the diagnosis of: listeriosis, cryptosporidiosis, candidiasis, toxoplasmosis. Interpretation of laboratory results.
