Learning outcomes
The student will learn to identify pharmaceutical compounds through chemical reactions and instrumental methods (chromatography and spectrometry).
Course contents
1) Physical, spectroscopic and chemical characterization of functional groups. 2) Identification of the drugs reported in the Italian Pharmacopeia. 3) Analytical and spectroscopic methods for the identification of drugs (for each method: introduction, instruments, examples): solubility, qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis, boiling point, melting point, density, refractometry, polarimetry, IR, NMR, MS. Spectrum-structure relationships. 4) Methods for the separation and purification of drugs (for each method: introduction, instruments, examples): crystallization, sublimation, distillation, extraction, chromatography. 5) Introduction to toxicology. Classification of xenobiotics and analytical methods. At least one detailed method for each class. 6) The main databases available for pharmaceutical research.

Teaching methods
During the lessons the identification of pharmaceutical compounds through chemical reactions and instrumental methods will be described. In the laboratory the above concepts will be practically applied. Additional practical demonstrations will be given for the point 6 of the program (The main databases available for pharmaceutical research).
Assessment methods
The final examination will start from the evaluation of the laboratory test and will go on with at least three of points described in the program. The teacher is available to verify at any moment (except the days before Winter, Spring and Summer vacations) the level of preparation. The student will ask it via email (aldo.andreani@unibo.it) and the teacher will give an appointment, usually within the next two days.
Teaching tools
Practical laboratory exercises with final examination (Via S. Donato 19/2).
