32648 - Architectural and Urban Survey (A)

Academic Year 2010/2011

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

The survey as a tool for knowing architectural reality; direct and instrumental procedures and methodologies, also in their historic development, tools and techniques - also digital ones - for a metric, morphological and thematical representation aimed at:  - providing the  fundamental elements for a correct and complete description of the object under survey and of its components, with a view to its exhaustive and articulated representation;  -developing the knowledge of survey techniques and its representation, included techniques relating to the new digital instrumentation;  -introducing to the knowledge of architectural and urban  environment with a view to understand and describe - at various scales – the architectural place, monument or building and its components.

Course contents

The course aims at providing knowledge and mastery of the theoretical fundamentals of survey, of operating methods and of measurement devices; knowledge of graphic conventions and relevant rules, of representation modalities of metric and morphological features, as well as of recurring
themes useful for the analysis with a view to the monument recovery and restoration. The Architectural Survey as a means of documentation and study of the architectural monument or building, the techniques - also digital ones - for a metric, morphological and thematical representation. Tools and techniques for the visual survey. Tools and techniques for the direct metric survey: the phases of survey process, of relevant documentation techniques
and of graphical and model syntheses. Analysis and representation – at various scales - of the architectural structure: functional components and components of the construction system.

Teaching methods

The course will be carried out through classroom and field lessons and practices. Field practices are aimed at providing a direct experience of survey methods and tools and a specific documentation on the theme chosen (usually, in common with the theme of Restoration Laboratory). Group and
individual work will be aimed at the use of tools for the indirect survey (group work) and the direct survey (individual group) and at the representation - at the proper scales - of an architectural building or of one of its parts, with previous large analysis and sketched documentation
collected in a special personal exercise-book including study preliminary surveys, measurement notes and any graphic notes taken during inspections, measurements and practices.

Assessment methods

Written and practical tests for the use of instrumentation, carried out during the course and aimed at checking the understanding of the contents of lessons and theme. The documentation of the various phases of survey process shall be produced at given deadlines, so as to draw up at least the draft of
the various tables during the course and with a view to the admittance to the final exam. The exam consists of: - an oral test and a practical test about the contents of the course; -a discussion and assessment of individual final works on exercise themes. The written test can be replaced by the
positive evaluation of ex-tempore realized in the course of the year.

Teaching tools

Elements for encoding the requested documentation and tools for measuring distances and heights of the monument, elements for the structuring of vector representation files and rasters of final products. Moreover, preliminary historiografical documentation about the objects under survey.
