Learning outcomes

A sound theoretical basis as well as a working knowledge of the fundamental
mathematical methods aimed at solving simple mechanical problems for discrete systems.

Course contents

Symbolic equations of Dynamics: D'Alembert principle. Lagrange equations.
Lagrangian systems and their first integrals. Symbolic equations of statics:
Principle of Virtual Work and its applications. Equilibrium conditions for a
holonomic system. Hamilton equations. Variational principles. Stability of equilibrium. First and second Lyapunov method. Small oscillations around a position of stable equilibrium.

Teaching methods

Standard lectures on the mathematical foundaments of discrete and continuum mechanics held and exercise classes held by a teaching assistant.
