Learning outcomes

Students gain in-depth knowledge of the historical events that took place in modern times in Italy within the context of the specific historiography and acquire methodological competence, together with the ability to plan their own research without assistance.

Course contents

The course aims to analyse the forms of organising power and the social hierarchies in Italian states in the early modern age. Particular attention is paid to the states in northern and central Italy, and the course also suggests how students may compare and evaluate the main historiographic orientations and the ways in which most recent studies interpret these themes. They are also aided in their personal research into this topic.

Note: Those students who enrolled before the latest changes in the course of studies, and who are therefore required to obtain only 3 credits, must analyse 3 texts, two from section a) and one from section b).

Those students who have so far not taken the Modern History exam in the course of their first three-year degree must agree on an individual programme with the lecturer.
