Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the knowledge of the mosaic materials, the causes and manifestations of their deterioration and the manufactory technology of the ancient mosaics, for the subsequent acquirement of the basic knowledge relative to conservation/restoration interventions on such artefacts. At the end of the course the student will be, in particular, able to: know classifying methods of the various materials constituting the mosaic tesserae and the supporting layers of floor and wall mosaics; know the control methods of the conservation conditions of the mosaic materials and structure; know the basis for cleaning, consolidation, filling and protection actions on mosaics.
Course contents
- Historical notes: the mosaics in the cultural heritage; evolution of the mosaic art and technique; mosaic typologies.
- The mosaic materials: stones, glasses, ceramics, binding mortars, others; deterioration of the mosaic materials.
- Restoration interventions: in situ restoration of floor mosaics; detachment of floor mosaics and laboratory restoration; in situ restoration of wall mosaics; restoration of mosaic laid on cement.
- Documentation: restoration report; technical card of the materials.
- Scientific investigation and diagnostics methods for mosaics.
