11286 - Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

Academic Year 2010/2011

  • Docente: Paola Ceroni
  • Credits: 5
  • SSD: CHIM/03
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

To acquire knowledge and methodologies necessary to work in an inorganic chemical laboratory. To illustrate the chemistry of coordination compounds and their main properties.

Course contents

Fundamental concepts of the chemistry of the coordination compounds: ligands, coordination number, isomerism, nomenclature, electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties, stability and reactivity. Brief discussions on technological and most recent applications of coordination compounds.

Laboratory experimental work involving: (a) construction of models of simple inorganic molecules and coordination compounds; (b) synthesis and characterization of compounds of the main group elements; (c) synthesis, analysis, characterization and reactivity of transition metal complexes. The synthesized compounds will be characterized by IR, UV, VIS spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, conventional analytical techniques.

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes on the teacher web site

Teaching methods

Lectures and laboratory experiments. The students must write a report at the end of each laboratory experiment.

Assessment methods

Oral examination. Evaluation of the work in the laboratory and the corresponding reports will be taken into account for the final grade. The reports have to be given one week in advance the oral examination.

Teaching tools

Video projector for lectures. In the laboratory the prepared species are characterized by means of IR, UV, VIS spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and conventional analytical techniques.
