Course contents

The course provides an analysis of the evolution of the dramatic genres between the Quattrocento and the first half of the XVIth century. We will consider the different experiences of theatre connected with the social, historical and literary background of important centers of the Italian Renaissance culture, such as Florence, Ferrara, Venice. Starting from the educational religious program of the florentine “sacra rappresentazione” and from mythological plays commonly performed in the Renaissance courts, we will consider some of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance theater written by Machiavelli and Ariosto.
