The Architectural Look
Our space is largely if not only architectural, i.e. a space arranged and transformed by human activity. Architcture is a function, and occasionally an art. A hous offers a shelter, a place for sleeping, washing oneself, cooking, working, bringing on a social life, hiding oneself, enjoying intimacy, enjoying loneliness. A street affords paths, encounters (and fights), trade. Etc. Our cities have known great changes through time, huge ones in the last sixty years.. Through sight we get information at a distance, but we need there not to be barrier. A reason for having opaque houses is preventing people from seeing, catching what is there behind the wall -- a garden, a school, a jail, people working, intimacies.
Which space have we arranged? In the Ideal City, attributed to Piero della Francesca, there is almost nothing alive. A tree coming out from behind a wall, two vases with plants on two windows, and a little more. The horizon is occluded, the ground is paved, and we see the sky. I will look at buildings, and glimpe here and there. Beautiful and ugly things, true and false, downtown and suburbs.
