Learning outcomes


Course contents

First class (6 CFU):
1) Introduction to the Greek history, sources, methods, instruments.  2) Main themes of Greek history from the Doric irruption to the end of the Hellenistic kingdoms (30 BC).

Second Class (the following 6 CFU).  Analysis of the following topic: Aspects of the Spartan kosmos.

Students of 12 CFU should study on texts nn. 1, 2, 3, and in addition:

reading of some pages from Herodotus, Xenophon  (Constition of Sparta), Plutarch (Life of Lycurgus, Life of Lysander, Life of Agesilaus) and other authors, to be completed with:

4) S. Valzania, Brodo nero. Sparta pacifica, il suo esercito, le sue guerre, Roma, Jouvence 1999.

5) E. Lévy, Sparta (it. trad.), Lecce, Argo 2006.

Students who will not attend the course of lectures (6 CFU) should study on texts nn. 1, 2, 3, and in addition:

- A. Santoni, Aristotele. La costituzione degli Ateniesi, Bologna, Cappelli Editore 1999.

- C. Bearzot, La giustizia nella Grecia antica, Roma, Carocci Editore 2008.

 

Students who will not attend the course of lectures (12 CFU) should study on texts  nn. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and in addition:

- Plutarco. Vita di Licurgo (Fondazione Valla, Milano 1980 and reprints, with introduction and notes by L. Piccirilli).

- C. Romano, Spartiati all'estero: corrotti o denigrati?, Galatina, Mario Congedo Editore 2004.

 

Teaching methods

Lessons will be all direct, with the help of copies and images to explain some topics.

Oral exam.
