Learning outcomes
Basis of solid mechanics and strength of materials, applied to the problems of industrial engineering. Analysis of stress and strain for simple structures or components of industrial interest.
Course contents
Definition of strain and stress. Axial, torsional and bending loads. Axial buckling. Analysis and design of elastic beam systems against bending. Shear, tangential stresses in thin walled components. Strain and stress transformations, Mohr's circles. Principal stresses and definition of strength criteria. Equation of the elastic line. Composite bending. Energy methods. Elements of fatigue of metals and fracture mechanics.
