Learning outcomes

At the end of classes the student will know the main periods in the evolution of  Latin, and some links  with the other languages of ancient Italy, (e.g. Greek, Etruscan, Umbrian).

I. Building a language for didactic poetry: Virgil's Georgics on love and desease
II. History of Latin language, with some specific focuses
III. Apuleius, Metamorphoses, book IX

I. Virgilio, Georgiche, a c. di A. BArchiesi, intr. di G.B. Conte, Milano, Oscar Mondadori, 1980 (più volte ristampate)

II. The study of  L.R. Palmer, The Latin language, London, Faber and Faber, 1961  is compulsory . The reading F.Stolz-A.Debrunner-P.Schmid, Storia della lingua latina, Pàtron, Bologna ,IV ed., 1993 is also recommended.

Lections in class.

Assessment methods

Viva voce examination, which will test:
- the ability of translating  the studied texts .
- the main linguistic aspects  (phonetics, morphology and syntax), from an historical point of view, trough reading and translating from the Latin texts dealt with in class and listed in the program.
