The student will yield a minimum competence in contemporary philosophy of language, anchored to a longer investigation of one of its central notions, reference

Course contents

Meaning and Context

A short introduction to philosophy of language:  G. Frege “Sense and Meaning”, L. Wittgenstein from the Philosophical Investigations on meaning and use, D. Davidson “Truth and Meaning”, S. Kripke from the 2nd of Naming and Necessity.
Successively, a discussion on the following topics: kanguage as philosophical problem, without existence, nothing; what first, words or things? Meaning's ancestor: drawing attention to; image and word; perception and attention; words' special distinctiveness .
