Learning outcomes

The goal of the course is to introduce the student to the basic concepts of mechanics of materials, the methodology of structural analysis for the design and/or the tests of structural elements.

Course contents

Recall about static: distributed and concentrated forces; operations upon forces.

Recall about geometrical properties of masses.

Rigid body constrained: static and kinematics of rigid bodies, definition of lability, statically determinate and indeterminate systems.

Beams: definition; hypothesis of rigid body in the analysis of beams; internal and external constraints; loads and reactions; internal forces and moments.

Continuum Mechanics: stress and strain definition; principal stress and strain components and directions.

Elastic solids: basic hypotheses; Hooke's Law; deformation energy.

Materials: ductile and brittle materials; failure criteria.

Beams: Saint-Venant postulate; axial stress, bending stress; Combined Axial and Bending stresses; torsional and shear stresses; safety verifications.
