00932 - Contemporary History

Learning outcomes

 The contemporary history course aims to make students understand how political systems work and how they interact with society, with particular attention to individual countries' constitutional frameworks, political parties and movements, and social processes in nineteenth and twentieth century history. By the end of the course the student will:

-         have a first in-depth understanding of historical events relating to course themes

-         have a critical grasp of comparative history methodology

-         be able to understand and explain specialist history essays

-         have acquired a method by which to deepen his/her understanding of the subjects dealt with

-         have acquired a method of developing the techniques of comparative history and applying them to case studies other than those considered.

Course contents

The course will focus the history of  XIXth and XXth centuries following a comparative approach. The class will examine the history of the principal european countries ( Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia). The course  will analise particularly  the crisis of political systems and the emerging of fascist dictatorships in the interwar-period

Assessment methods

1 ) Assesment methods for students that attend the class
At the end of the course  students must take first of all a written test about general history.  If students pass this test, they must take an oral examination. Subject of the oral examination will be the  book selected by students in the hort list. More details on the test for the students that attend tha class will be given during the course

2) Assessment methods Students that take examination without attending the class.
Students  must take an examination divided in two parts. For the first part (general history) students must pass a written and an oral examination. For the second part Students must take an oral exam in which students will discuss the book that they have chosen in the long list.
