Learning outcomes

Knowledge of some of some contemporary views on philosophy and on philosophy of language.

Course contents

Meaning and Concept

A short introduction to philosophy of language, discussing the following papers: G. Frege “Sense and meaning”, P. Grice  “Meaning” and  “Logic and Conversation”, “A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs”.
Hence, a presentation of Plato's theory of ideas in the Timaeus, and of Wittgenstein's criticism of universals and of mentalistm in the Philosophical Investigations.
Finally, an illustration of philosophy as a form of knowledge.

Lecture with discussion.

Assessment methods

Written exam. The exam will be available ten days before discussion at the address http://www-utenti.dsc.unibo.it/%7Epaolo.leonardi/, and has to be sent in by email three days in advance of discussion.  The exact schedule of the discussion will be on line 24 hours in advance of the session.
