Learning outcomes

Offering to the students the tools to diagnose and treat the main perinatal pathologies, especially in the equine species and in small animals.

Course contents

Phisiology of the prenatal period.

Small animals - Perinatal cares. Physiologic differences between the adult and the puppy. Neonatal diseases: congenital, traumatic, environmental, infectious and parasitic, fading puppy complex, neonatal isoerythrolysis. Principles of neonatal intensive therapy.

Horse - Monitoring and management of the high-risk pregnancy, assistance to delivery, neonatal cares and resuscitation. Placenta exam, maternal behavoiour and lactation. The orphan foal. Diagnostic standard protocol and principles of neonatal intensive therapy. Neonatal diseases: prematurity and dismaturity, failure of passive transfer, neonatal isoerythrolysis, Perinatal Asphyxia Syndrome, septicaemia and local infections, pathologies of the urinary tract and gastrointestinal diseases.
