58046 - Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry (A-L)

Academic Year 2009/2010

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Industrial Chemistry (cod. 0013)

Learning outcomes

Operation with lab-scale apparatus for the management of a chemical reaction.

Knowledge of general principles for mass and energy balances, to be applied to process units in chemical processes.

Evaluation of the efficiency for chemical reactions: conversion, yield, selectivity

Management of complex chemical reactions in industrial chemical processes.

Course contents

Laboratory:

A) Evaluation of surface area in biphasic gas/liquid systems, for reactions carried out in semi-batch reactors.

B) Evaluation of the reaction scheme for complex reactions (parallel, consecutive) by means of the study of variations of yields in toluene isopropylation, as functions of the reaction time.

C) Reactions in continuos reactors; an example of oxidation reactor.

D) Reactions in continuos reactors: an example of acid-base reaction.

Lessons:

Interfacial area in biphasic systems, mass-trasnfer in gas-liquid systems, rate-determining step.

Complex reaction schemes: parallel and consecutive reactions.

Evaluation of the maximum economic income in complex reactions.

Discontinuous and continuous reactors: generalities.

Mass balances applied to a chemical process. Process units, number of informations necessary for making the mass balance, examples.

Energy balances: generalities.

The choice of the optimal reactor for a chemical reaction.

The management of oxidaion reactions: safe conditions, flammability diagram, choice of the operating conditions..
