Learning outcomes

Study of microrganisms and viruses in their interaction with human host and in their ability to cause pathologies. In particular, knowledge of:  virulence and pathogenicity factors, dynamics of the infectious process, laboratory diagnostic techniques  and drug susceptibility testing.

Course contents

Diagnosis of infection:Diagnosis of infection and identification of microrganisms and viruses; molecular techniques for the detection of nucleic acids; techniques for the detection of antigens; serological reactions and immunological diagnosis of infection.

Bacteriological Analysis: isolation and identification of pathogenetic bacteria, antibacterial drug susceptibility testing.

Virological Analysis: isolation and identification of pathogenetic viruses.

Bacterial Pathogenesis:  mechanisms of host colonisation, mechanisms of pathogeneis, bacterial exotoxins.

Viral Pathogenesis: virus-cell interaction, kind of infection (cytocidal, persistent, latent, transforming); dynamics of the infectious process.
