Learning outcomes
Students will come to know basic instruments (grammars, dictionaries and corpora) and basic translation methodology and strategies (analysis of source text and its transposition in target text). They will also be able to apply instruments and strategies while translating a variety of simple texts from and into English. They will finally be able to identify and use the translation strategies most useful for the communicative functions of the texts to be translated.
Course contents
During the course Adele D'Arcangelo and Jane Johnson will show
students how to approach a variety of texts corresponding to a
variety of translation problems. Students will be asked to discuss
different strategies to ba applied to every single text or problem.
All texts will be analysed from different perspectives: genre,
function, content and language/style both for passive and for
active translation.
Readings/Bibliography
All texts to be used during the course will be collected in a
reader available at Carta Carbone Copisteria. Any bibliographical
references will be given during the course.
Teaching methods
Lessons will focus mainly on individual and collective practice.
Students will be asked to discuss their ideas and difficulties as
well as to give in possible assignments that will be used for
feedback lessons.
Assessment methods
The assessment exam will consist of a translation test during which
students will have to translate two texts from and into English in
about 4 hours time. The texts will be similar to those analysed
during the course. Further details about exams will be given during
classes.
Teaching tools
During labs and if/when necessary teachers will be using online
dictionaries as well as the net to do research
