a) Lectures held by the Professor of the course (3-4 hours a week, during a period of 8-10 weeks)

b) Tutorial workshops in which students carry out practical exercises based on the contents of the lectures (1-2 hours a week during the 1st and 2nd semester)

c)  Practical language skills, classes held by native speakers (4 hours a week during both semesters NB.

Activities a) and c) are inseparable components of the course, and students must pass written exams for both these two activities.

The lectures,held by the professor of the course, explore further the Halladayan model of Functional Grammar introduced in English Language A and applies this model of language analysis to brief texts.

Teaching methods

Students are divided into groups according to their surname (students with surname A – F:Prof. Lipson;  students with surname G-O and P-Z : Prof.Kunst). During the lectures,  the Hallidayan model of linguistic analysis will be explored and applied to various brief texts.  Workshops, open to students attending the lectures, will be held during both semesters in which students will have the occasion to review and carry out exercises covering the material introduced in the lectures.  Notices regarding these lectures and workshops will be posted on the bulletin board at the DLLSM, 2nd floor, wing B, and on the ELSP pages.   Consult the individual professor's site on the faculty site for notices as well.

During the language skills classes, students will practice all language skills reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Assessment methods

The English Language B exam is divided into three parts, for all students, for those who attend and for those who do not attend.

1.      a written test based on the content of the lectures held by the professor and the content of the course book for the current academic year.  See the website ELSP, Attività Didattica, Lingua Inglese B, “Indicazioni per l'esame scritto di FG”.  Students who pass this written exam will NOT take it again;

2.      a written language exam, level B2. See the website ELSP, Attività Didattica, Esercitazioni, “Facsimile written exam”.  A photocopy of the current langauge exam typology is availabe at a copy shop in the vicinity. For information on B2 target level see “Competenze Linguistiche” under Attività Didattica on the ELSP website. Students who pass this written exam will NOT take it again;

3.      a speaking ability test (SAT).  A facsimile of the SAT is also available aon the ELSP website, on the Esercitazioni page, under Attività Didattica.  Students can take the SAT only after having passed the two written tests.  Students who choose English as their third language do not take the SAT.  They take only the two written tests.    After the SAT, students enrol for an ‘oral' in which the final mark for the course can be registered.

The two written exams can be taken in separate sessions and their score is valid for 6 sessions. Results of the written exams are published on the Faculty site as well as posted on the bulletin board on the 2nd floor, wing B, Via Cartoleria 5.

Students may NOT register their final mark unless they have already registered their 2 Literature modules from the previous year.
