Learning outcomes

Students will acquire general notions and basal knowledge on properties of elements and main chemical compounds as a function of their electronic structure.Particular attention will be devoted to solid state properties and to the behaviour of materials for electronics.

Course contents

Atomic structure of matter: atoms, fundamental particles, atomic number, isotopes, atomic mass, mole and molar mass.Main classes of inorganic compounds and nomenclature

Electronic structure of atoms and periodicity of atomic properties: the wave nature of matter, wave mechanics, atomic orbitals, quantum numbers, electron configurations of the elements and periodic properties.
