Academic Year 2008/2009

  • Docente: Cesare Biserni
  • Credits: 4
  • SSD: ING-IND/10
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Preventive Techniques for the Environment and Workplace (for certified professional technicians of prevention in the environment and workplace) (cod. 0371)

Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing essential information concerning basic and applied thermodynamics, necessary for the comprehension of energy balances. Particular care will be posed to the properties of humid air, and to its transformations applied to HVAC systems. Furthermore, the students will learn the basic mechanisms of Heat Transfer.

Course contents

The nature of thermodynamics: temperature and heat. Applications of thermodynamics to the closed system. The first law of the thermodynamics: work, internal energy and energy balances. The second law of thermodynamics and formulation of entropy.  The open system: conservation of mass, and balance of mechanic energy. The loss term. Macroscopic properties of pure substances: p-v-T surface and pressure-volume diagram for a substance. Ideal gases and equation of state. T-s and h-s diagrams.

Thermal Conduction. Fourier law. Fourier equation. Steady state solution: plane layer. Electric analogy. Thermal Convection. Coefficient of convection. Dynamic and thermal boundary layer. Combined heat transfer.

Cooling systems: basic concepts, basic compression cycle, multi-stage configurations. Absorption machines. Heat pump: basic concepts, (EHP) electrical heat pump, (GHP) gas heat pump. Energetic and exergetic balances, COP. Psychrometrics: Mixtures of air and water vapour. Transformations of humid air. Psycrometric diagram.  Air conditioning systems: main configurations. An example of design.

Teaching methods

During the course, many lessons will be dedicated to exercises on applications of the basic concepts.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of a written test and a brief oral part, dealing with the notions presented during the course.
