Learning outcomes
Applied knowledge on the beneficial role of mycorrhizospheric micro-organisms for horticultural plant productivity.
Knowledge Prerequisites:
Biology of Micro-organisms; Agricultural microbiology; Microbial ecology.
Course contents
Metabolic diversity of micro-organisms in natural and cultivated soils. Microbial ecology and availability of nutrients for natural and crop plants. Rhizosphere and mycorrhizosphere. Useful microbial functions for plant productivity. Microbiology of the rhizosphere: culture-dependent and direct molecular methods. Perspectives for research and field applications of probiotic micro-organisms in low-input and organic horticulture.

Teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory experiments; use of on line databases.
Assessment methods
Written examination and laboratory reports, to assess student's knowledge of teorethical bases, and practical and critical skills.
Teaching tools
Whiteboard, overhead projector, slide projector, video projector, Internet link, professional research laboratory. Laboratory activity will be agreed during lectures (appropriate clothes are needed).
