Learning outcomes

Knowledge and competence in moral philosophy:
- acquiring an encompassing view of the history of ethical theories as part of the European cultural legacy;
- understanding cultural/historical construction of moral principles and values;
- critically assessing applied ethical issues;
- connecting philosophical theories to problems and practices in moral education.

Course contents

SOCRATES: ETHICS, EDUCATION, CITIZENSHIP -
General introduction to Greek ethics; the development of the polis and democracy; the Sophistic movement; life of Socrates; Socrates as an educator; Socratic dialogue and Socratic ignorance; the concept of virtue; care of one's soul and the pursuit of wisdom; moral intellectualism and teaching of virtue.
