  • Credits: 5
  • SSD: CHIM/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Mario Berrettoni (Modulo 1) Marco Giorgetti (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical Technologies for the Environment and Waste Management (cod. 0491)

Learning outcomes

This course is aimed to provide educational experiences which challenge students to act in a analytical chemistry laboratory, applying the appropriate methodology learned in the theory. Students are required to follow experiments and encouraged to familiarise to both instrumental aspect and analytical methodology of the proposed analytical technique. Each experiment session must ends with the motivated evaluation of the analytical data, performed with the appropriate statistical test. In addition, students will learn how to clearly compile the laboratory notebook.

Course contents

The following experiments will be performed in the laboratory:

  1. Calibration of buret, pipet and volumetric flask by weight of water delivered.
  2. Titrimetric determinations: Neutralization methods. Standardization of HCl by means of two different indicator (statistical approach).
  3. Titrimetric determinations: Complexation. Determination of Ca(II) by EDTA.
  4. Titrimetric determinations: Determination of potassium tetra-oxalate using redox and neutralization method compared (statistical approach).
  5. Potentiometry. Glass electrode: Calibration, calibration curve (E-pH), and tritimetric determination of an acid  using Gran's plot.
  6. Potentiometry. Titrimetric determination of Cl- and I- solution.
  7. Conductivity. Evaluation of the cell constant. Titration of strong acid with strong base.
  8. UV-Vis Spectroscopy. Fundamentals of spectrophotometric measurements: Beer's law.
  9. UV-Vis Spectroscopy. Determination of total Fe in a sample of water by o-phenantroline method. Calibration curve.

Teaching methods

The laboratory course of analytical chemistry involves front lecture (series of introductionary notes for the laboratory experiences), numerical calculation on solution chemistry and laboratory experiences. Students should have a bound laboratory notebook for recording all the data at the time of the observation during laboratory classes. The recording of data on loose pieces of paper or in a preliminary note book is expressly forbidden.

Assessment methods

Final quotation is based on the ability of the student to understand and perform correctly the experiments as well as on the experiment report. The experiment report will be compiled in class upon all the experiments have been done, and it should be filled up using the experimental data contained in the laboratory notebook.

Teaching tools

Use of the projector and blackboard during classes.
