Learning outcomes
Introduction to the land evolution problems using the specific methodologies of the Earth Sciences and to the related land management implications.
Course contents
Four thematic field trips (eachone lasting 8 hours) dealing with different kinds of environmental processes will be performed in Emilia Romagna Region areas. A preliminary 1hour lesson has an introductory character.
Lesson 1) Upper Secchia River valley . Geomorphological land recognition; geological data discussion; karst environment and related water chemistry data discussion.
Lesson 2) Hillslopes evolution and related land management and control (landslides recognition and control and land use).
Lesson 3) Low alluvial palin areas management (quarries, river beds evolution, subsidence, etc.), particularly attention will be payed to fluvial dynamics and related measurements.
Lesson 4) Regional coastal areas problems (Holocene evolution, beach environment ant its management and monitoring).

Teaching methods
Direct field approach to various regional areas by means of: understanding the local geological setting; recognition and restitution of the main geomorphological units; possible discussion of land use projects, artificial structures, etc.; possible other ideas concerning the processes evolution at different time scales. In particular, various kinds of practical exercises will be performed such as i) a personal outline of a geomorphological map fo a selected area, ii) water discharge measurements in natural riverbeds, iii) coastal equilibria evaluations, etc.
Assessment methods
End spoken test concerning a personal written text dealing with a topic previously defined in agreement with the teacher and discussion of the solving method applied to the previously acquired field data.
Teaching tools
Classical field geology instruments, topographic maps, technical issues for the practical approaches, environmental field monitoring instruments.
