Course contents

The Woman and the Artist: gender/genre in the western canon. Interdisciplinary methods in Women's and Gender studies.

Key words:

Feminist and gender methodology, Genealogy, Intertextuality, Genre/Gender, Cultural Memory, Identity, Comparative literary studies within a gender perspective, Re-vision, Reading as a woman, Nomadic Subjectivity, discourse analysis, comparative analysis between Women and Gender.

The course is divided in two parts (1 and 2) and it includes tutorial lessons and seminars. It intends to:

1. Familiarize the students with the methodological debates within women's and gender studies in a transdisciplinary perspective.

2. Explain the category of gender, class, ethnicity, ideology, power, memory, sexuality, generational relationships, and their interconnections.

3. Analyse gender divisions and divisions among women

4. Introduce the students to comparative and multicultural analysis within a gender perspective.

5. Deconstruct the canon formation within the Western tradition and the female stereotypes in literary texts.

6. Explain the student the construction of woman's identity and subjectivity, and the process of inclusion and exclusion of minority literatures within the canon in the western tradition

7. Facilitate the students to re-read and re-vision the issues related to women's cultural memory using case studies, analysis of diverse kinds of texts (literary, theoretical, visual) on main themes in feminist, women's and gender studies, with specific reference to Oral History, memory, controversial memories and contested histories, and the interconnections of gender, power and ideology.

8. Enable the students to investigate texts and sources through epistemological approaches associated with standpoint theory and situated knowledge.
