Learning outcomes

Course contents

In the academic year 2007/08 the first part of the course will examine Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics and its image of practical rationality and of the perfectly virtuous man, together with the contribution that politics can give to human happiness. In the second part of the course we will examine the formation and development of American neo-conservative thought, which had a fundamental role in the policy of the Republica Party since the Seventies. We will also examine the relation between neo-conservatism and such authors of the past as Plato, Machiavelli, Locke, Tocqueville and Strauss.

 

For the first part (5 credits) there are two compulsory readings:

 

Aristotele, Etica Nicomachea, a cura di Carlo Natali, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 1999 (or any other complete translation, also in English).

 

G. Giorgini, I doni di Pandora. Filosofia, politica e storia nella Grecia antica, Bologna, Bonomo Editore, 2002, 2a edizione.

 

For the second part, the student should choose one of the following topics with two related texts:

Idealist neoconservatorism:

 

N. Podhoretz, La Quarta Guerra Mondiale: come è incominciata, che cosa significa e perché dobbiamo vincerla, Torino, Lindau, 2004.

In order to pass the exam for 10 credits the student must study the programme of both parts.

English-speaking students may prefer to read the works in English language.

Teaching methods

Two cycles of lectures, each 30 hours long. Active participation and discussion of the topics by students are strongly encouraged.

Assessment methods

Oral exam at the end of the course. Students may present a written paper on a subject decided with the teacher.
