Learning outcomes

Main task of the course is to supply the basic knowledge of the historical, artistic and archaeologic development of a "periferic" region of ancient Greece, important to understand the spread of Greek culture in Italy and its interactions with local cultures. During the course the main cities of Magna Graecia and Sicily will be focused on, in order to highlight their leading role in the diffusion of Greek cultural traditions among Italic populations.

Course contents

1. General aspects: The Greeks in Italy: from the earliest Micenean contacts to the colonization. The local populations and the main urban centres of Magna Graecia and Sicily. Basic knowledge of architectural and urbanistic features of the Greek colonies.

2. Focus: Temples and religion in Magna Graecia and Sicily.

All the students are invited to take part to the lessons. Otherwise, students are invited to contact the teacher in order to define alternative learning programs.
