Learning outcomes
The aim of this integrated course is to provide the Veterinary students with a good background to the fields of pharmacology First of all, general concepts and principles of kinetics and dynamics of drugs, and the legislation about veterinary drug are administered. The second object is to consider the pharmacologyc, therapeutic and toxicologic activities of veterinary drugs (pets and food animals).
Course contents
- Veterinary Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (1 CFU): Administration routes. Disposition and fate of drugs and toxicants in the body. Plasma concentration-time profile and kinetic parameters. Mechanisms of drug action. Dose-response relationships.
- Veterinary Pharmacology and Pharmacy (4 CFU): General principles of pharmacy (different pharmaceutical forms, prescription writing). Pharmacologic, therapeutic and toxicologic activities of drugs used in animals: chemotherapy of microbial, fungal and parasitic diseases; histamine antagonists; local and general anesthetics; nonsteroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatories; diuretics; drugs acting on: the autonomic and somatic nervous systems, the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system.

Teaching methods
General concepts and principles of kinetics and dynamics of drugs and the pharmacologic and therapeutic activities of veterinari drugs will be discussed inside lectures. The lectures will be supported by practical and supervised work at the laboratory.
Assessment methods
The knowledge of the student about the topics considered during the lessons will be checked by means an oral examination. Written in itinere examinations (quiz) are scheduled.
