46667 - Specialized Organic Products for Biotechnological Processes

Academic Year 2007/2008

  • Docente: Paolo Zani
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: CHIM/06
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LS) in Industrial Molecular Biotechnologies (cod. 0444)

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes  : The student could learn some informations which , on one side, complement those given by the course " Fondamenti delle Tecnologie Chimiche Industriali": emphasis is given on the industrial aspect of BIotechnology in terms of the world most important "biotech" corporations with their corporate evolution and typical range of products, following a similar approach given in the other course for the description of the leader chemical and pharmaceutical industries.  In addition, informations will be presented about specific products and/or materials, which could have a prevalent organic constitution, and can be used in a series of applications where the " biotech" specialist can develop his activity.  ( Some more contents could be transferred, based on the curriculum of the individual student, and avoiding duplications.)

Course contents

a) The “biotech” industrial sector : the most important BIOTECH enterprises  in the world as production and sales; their historical profile in the context of the “Life sciences”industries ( mainly traditional pharmaceutical industries).

b) Polimeric materials : general concepts  and some specialty polimers.

c)Organic and /or composites specialistic products : their applications to selective separation processes, with emphasis on the technologies for separation and analysis of mixture of enantiomers.

d) Some technological aspects of industrial processes : in particular, catalysis, ecological sustainability, waste treatments, protection and safety.

e) Protection of intellectual industrial property : the patent.( this item should be given to those students who did not follow the related course “ Tecnologie chimiche industriali” or other courses where informations about patents are present).

Readings/Bibliography

Due to the purpose of the course, the docent suggest the same textbook indicated for the course  " Fondamenti delle tecnologie Chimiche industriali" --
Alan Heaton :

An Introduction to Industrial Chemistry  '3 ed.

Blackie Academic and Professional London 1996 --

, which will be integrated by specific material .

Teaching methods

Traditional classroom lesson, with presentation of transparencies.

Assessment methods

Final exam (Oral) concerning the content of the course; at choice, it could be complemented by a short oral presentation by the student about a topic related to the course ( chosen in accordance with the docent).

Teaching tools

Photocopies of the transparencies used by the docent will be available to the students.
