Learning outcomes
The student should recognize the main characteristics of the distinct goups of microorganisms, the main diagnostic methods for identification of microorganisms, and the pathogenetic mechanisms employed by pathogens. The student should also have specific knowledge on pathogens responsible of infections of the uro-genital tract, and infections transmitted during pregnancy or at birth.
Course contents
Characteristics of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Generalities about transmission routes of infections.
Mechanisms of pathogenesis and host defenses.
Generalities on direct and indirect diagnosis of infections.Generalities on vaccines. The serological diagnosis.
Transmission of infectious agents through breast milk.
Pathogens that cause infections of the uro-genital tract: E. coli, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, candida, herpes simplex virus, papillomavirus.
Mother-to-child-transmission: pathogens that can be transmitted during pregnancy or perinatal period or postnatal period, including 1) bacteria (Treponema pallidum, Streptococcus agalactiae), 2) viruses (rubella virus, parvovirus B19, cytomegalovirus, HIV, hepatitis viruses), and 3) protozoa (Toxoplasma gondii).

Teaching methods
In-class lectures will be supported by video projector and PC.
Assessment methods
The examination will evaluate whether the students have mastered the above listed skills and have reached the teaching objectives. The final oral examination will focus on specific questions about bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

In-class lectures will be supported by slides. Most of slides will be available online at the end of the course (AMS Campus, http//campus.unibo.it).
