  Historical approach to Literature; methods of readings.

Course contents

  The focus of the academic lessons (A.A. 2016-2017) deals with LITERARY WORD AND THE ARTS.

 
Firstly, we'll consider the link between Dante's Comedy and the painting of his age. Secondly, we'll consider the relation between literary word and music.

A) In order to reach a critical knowledge of the first part of the program, students will study M. VEGLIA, Vedere la "Commedia". Dante e lo statuto dell'immagine, in press.

For the second part of the program, students are invited to know the following texts:

RICCARDO BACCHELLI, Gioacchino Rossini, Roma, Castelvecchi, 2016.

FRANCESCO CIABATTONI, La citazione è sintomo d'amore. Cantautori italiani e memoria letteraria, Roma, Carocci, 2016.


B) In addition, each student has to study 5 books, choosed among this list:

2 ancients: Dante, Commedia; Petrarca, Canzoniere; Boccaccio, Decameron; Machiavelli, Il Principe; Ariosto, Orlando furioso; Tasso, Gerusalemme liberata;
3 modern and contemporary books: Alfieri, Vita scritta da esso (o, in alternativa, Saul e Mirra); Foscolo, Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis e Sepolcri; Leopardi, Canti o Operette morali o Lettere da Bologna; Manzoni, I promessi sposi; Carducci, Letture del Risorgimento italiano o Rime e ritmi; G. Pascoli, Myricae; D'Annunzio, Il piacere; Verga, I Malavoglia; Pirandello, Il fu Mattia Pascal; Viani, Racconti; Svevo, La coscienza di Zeno; Montale, Ossi di seppia oppure Occasioni; Bacchelli, Il mulino del Po; Calvino, Il barone rampante; Sciascia, Il giorno della civetta.

For each of this books, students have to know the life of the author, his cultural "portrait", style and afterlife.

Teaching methods


  Lessons will consider the critical interpretation of the texts, with a particular attention to the connection between Literature, History and Society.

Assessment methods


  The assesments methods are a final exam and a test.
