Learning outcomes

The course intends to provide basic knowledge within the field of the history of cultural philosophy, through the analysis of significant traditions, moments and figures in the historical and philosophical contexts between XVIIth and XIXth centuries.

Course contents

The Reception of Spinoza in Italian Philosophical Culture between Nineteenth and Twentieth Century.   The first part of the course will provide the knowledge and the instruments for the analysis of Spinoza's texts, through the reading and comment of the Ethics.  In particular, the focus will be on the concepts of God and Nature and on Spinoza's theory of the  modalities of knowledge and passions. After the examination of Spinoza's works, it follows the exploration of the foundamental aspects of Italian historiography between the nineteenth and twentieth century, with a particular attention on the reflections made by Antonio Rosmini, Vincenzo Gioberti, Bertrando Spaventa and Giovanni Gentile. Firstly, the constitutional elements of these authors' thought will be figured out and, secondly, Italian philosophical historiography will be confronted with the French and the German ones.  All these authors will be then confronted with the philosophy of Descartes and Spinoza.

Assessment methods

The oral exam will assess the students' acquired knowledge regarding the lessons' contents and the books indicated in the bibliography. An acceptable evaluation corresponds to a good ability to discuss the themes, problems and key-concepts analysed during the course. Particular appreciation will be given to those students who are able to use an appropriate lexicon concerning the subject and to contextualize themes, problems, authors and works, culturally and historically.
