Course contents

The course offers 60 hours of didactic preparation with a mother tongue English teacher.The approach to grammar combines explicit grammar teaching and  contrastive analysis of  Italian and English. The morpho-syntactic areas will be dealt with:

verbal tense system

The relationship between verbal morphology and sentence structure (position of adverbs, negatives, question forms);

sentence patterns (subject pronoun,inversion of pronoun,placement of pronoun);

The use of the article:

Exercises are designed to consolidate structural and lexical knowledge, which will alow students to progress from an intermediate level to an advanced intermediate level.

The grammatical syllabus will include:

Present simple/present continuous,past simple and continuous,will/ to be going to,comparatives/superlatives,countable/uncountable nouns,expressions of quantity,modal verbs,present perfect simple,first/second/third conditional,used to,past perfect,passives,indirect speech.

Teaching methods

The approach to grammar is a diversified one which combines the inductive method with contrastive analysis and explicit grammar teaching. This combination gives maximum flexibility and will allow the teacher to cope with individual problems students may have. The reading texts provide useful vocabulary  as well as improving and developing  comprehension skills.

Assessment methods

The written exam will be divided into two parts.

Reading comprehension. The student will be asked to answer questions on a short article relative to the course.

Grammar test. Exercises concerning  sentence completion (verbal tenses,inserting correct pronouns, etc.), sentence transformation (e.g. active to passive, positive to question form etc.).The test will be based on the course syllabus.
