The Italian tax code

The “codice fiscale” (Italian tax code) is essential to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, entering into a rental contract, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Bologna.

How to obtain the Italian tax code

You can obtain your Italian tax code before or after arriving in Italy.

Before arriving in Italy

If the Italian Consulate / Embassy in your country offers this service, you can apply for an official Italian tax code before you travel to Italy.

After arriving in Italy

To obtain the tax code after arriving in Italy you have two alternatives:

You can go to the local “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) office on your Campus.

Contact one of the following “Uffici Territoriali” (local offices):

during opening hours and by appointment, which you have to book on the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) website.

You must submit these documents:

  • the application form, which must be completed and signed. If you do not yet have a permanent address in Italy, you can leave box C blank;
  • for non-EU citizens: valid passport, with visa (when required);
  • for EU citizens: passport or identity document.

As soon as you have a permanent address in Italy, or if you change address / residence in the future, you can book an appointment and go back to the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) to update your data, by handing in the documents relating to your accommodation. If in the meantime you have registered with the “Servizio Sanitario Nazionale” (Italian National Health Service), you can ask for the “Tessera Sanitaria” (European Health Insurance Card) to be printed and sent to the address provided.

For more information on how to obtain the tax code, consult the Agenzia delle Entrate website.

An explanatory video in English on the Italian tax code is available.

You can contact the Tax Code desk service

If you are an international student enrolled at the University of Bologna, an incoming exchange student, an international researcher or professor at the University of Bologna, you can take advantage of the Tax Code desk service, offered in partnership with the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency).

To obtain the Italian tax code you must send an email to the Right to Higher Education Unit () attaching these documents:

  • the application form, which must be completed and signed. If you do not yet have a permanent address in Italy, you can leave box C blank;
  • for non-EU citizens: valid passport, with visa (when required);
  • for EU citizens: passport or identity document.

The Right to Higher Education Unit sends the documents to the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) and, once the tax code certificate is received, it sends it by email to the user who requested it.

The issue of the Italian tax code through the University Desk can take approximately 7 - 10 days. Those who need to obtain the Italian tax code urgently must contact “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) independently as explained above.

If you need the tax code urgently during the summer, we suggest you go to the local Agenzia delle Entrate.
