  2. Animal Production and Food Safety
  3. Animal Health
  4. Clinical Sciences
Research topics

Curriculum 1: Basic Sciences
The research activity will deal with projects in veterinary anatomy and physiology as well as in biochemistry and clinical biochemistry applied to veterinary medicine. All the domestic species, as well as the exothic ones, may be investigated. The research project will be defined with the tutor.

Curriculum 2: Animal Production and Food Safety
All the research activities related to breeding/rearing, alimentation and nutrition of all the domestic and most of the acquatic species will be considered. In addition, the reserche activity will focus on the control of the quality and the safety of all the products of animal origin.

Curriculum 3: Animal Health
The research activities will deal with infectious and parasitic diseases of domestic animals, the epedemiology and the zoonoses with their sanitary control. They will also focus on the pathological anatomy in domestic species, from both histological and macroscopic points of view.

Curriculum 4: Clinical Sciences
Research activities will regard internal medicine, surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology in all the species of veterinary interest.

Job opportunities and potential areas of employment
The career opportunities are the one of all the graduated in Veterinary Medicine and related disciplines (animal production and biology), but with a clearly higher qualification. Other career opportunities may be employment in public (IZS, ISS, University) or private (pharmaceutical industry, feed mills, processing plants of food of animal origin) companies.

Learning outcomes
The training objectives are different depending on the Curriculum chosen by the PhD candidate. In fact, PhD candidates could attend curricula whose aim is the acquisition of a know-how which will allow them to carry out a highly qualified research activity in the field of Veterinary and Biological Sciences; others will attend curricula with a basic research finalized to give information to clinicians and veterinary practitioners, while others will follow professionalizing curricula whose aim is the acquisition of knowledge which allow the veterinary professional activity and of animal production in a very qualified manner. It is important to stress that these last ones will have the opportunity to draw noteworthy cues of applied research from the clinic casuistry.
Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates
Through the methodologies of the biomedic research applied to veterinary sciences, food safety and animal production, PhD candidates will conduct their research activity in the labs, surgerys and in all the structures typical of the activity of a Vet (veterinary hospital, dairy farm, National Institute for Artificial Insemination, slaughterhouse, labs and fishpond for Aquaculture and fish pathology located in Cesenatico, processing industries of animal origin food, etc.) All the PhD candidates will always closely operate with their supervisor. According to the PhD Programmes Regulation of the University of Bologna, the supervisor will be selected within the members of the Academic Board. In case the supervisor is not included in the list of the members of the Academic Board, a cosupervisor will be nominated within the Academic Board.
Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes
The University of Bologna will guarantee a basic education on the management of the research, on the knowledge of the research systems, its financing and its valorisation. The PhD programme will collaborate with the Language Centre for the organization of courses of scientific English language; in addition, courses on the safety of the working environment will be activated. The PhD programme will organize seminars (by members of the Academic Board and by other teachers of DIMEVET) on transversal topics (common to the 4 curricula of the PhD programme). Finally, the supervisors will stimulate the PhD candidates to participate in events (workshops, congresses, scientific meetings, stages, etc.) and will improve their informatic knowledge in relation to their specific research projects.
Internationalization features
Each PhD candidate should spend a period of training activity abroad, in Universities or research centres highly qualified. Internatinal Professors are already widely involved. The PhD candidate has the possibility to work in European financed projects. Agreements for awarding double Doctoral degrees have been signed with the University of Litoral (Argentina) and the University of Mekelle (Ethiopia). A cotutelle agreement has been signed for PhD candidates with the University of Litoral, Argentina.
Expected research results and products
The research activity of PhD candidates should exit in publications in International journals, especially in those of high level, in presentig papers at both International and National meetings and in documentation of clinical cases. All published papers will be inserted in the IRIS system. At least two publications indexed on ISI/SCOPUS/PUBMED are expected to be produced in order to be admitted to sit the PhD final exam.
